Biathlon Update - NORAM #4 Valcartier, Quebec
02.01.12
The fourth North American Cup that was scheduled for LaPatrie was quickly moved to Valcartier after Tuesday's rain deteriorated the course. Athletes and coaches quickly changed reservations and arranged for the change in race venue. The Maine Winter Sports Center Athletes arrived to Valcartier on Friday afternoon to preview the course at the Myrian Bedard Biathlon Center in the powdery snow.

At Saturday's sprint race the biathletes tried to float over the mushy four to six inches of freshly groomed and fallen snow on course. Many of the athlete's skied down an intensity level to maintain glide on the hilly course. In the morning, the Olympic Development Team athletes captured two podium finishes. In the early afternoon the Development Team athletes copied their older teammates performance by collecting two podium finishes in the air rifle class.

Biathlon Update - 12/20/11 West Yellowstone- NorAm #2
The biathletes started the season off on snow in West Yellowstone, Montana.

The trails were covered with excellent snow and the new metal targets at the range provided excellent altitude training. This two week camp allowed the athletes to train at altitude, shoot on snow, and enjoy hours of base training on the Rendezvous Trails. The MWSC Teams had awesome support from all of the folks in West Yellowstone! We want to thank WYSEF, Mark Sheppard at Altius Firearms, Freeheel and Wheel and Alpen Guides for making this camp and races a great experience! If your ever in West Yellowstone pay these people a visit.

At the end of the camp, the race season started for Maine Winter Sports biathletes with the second NorAm. There were a total of six podium finishes over the two day race series.

Biathlon Update - 11/6/11 Gearing up-
As the days are getting shorter, the number of days before the snow shortens as well. And we couldn't be more excited or ready for it! Our MWSC biathlon team is gearing up for racing season! The Fall has been a busy one, as they always are. A great month of training here in Northern Maine through September lead us right into a high altitude camp in Utah for a good part of October. We were one big happy family, with the MWSC Nordic and biathlon team joining together. We all quickly settled nicely into life in Park City, living at 7200 feet.

There was a lot going on in the area during our time out West. The U.S. Ski team held a National Team camp, which brought in a lot of other non-National Team athletes as well. We all joined in at least one or two workouts with this group. It was an intense crew and a big one, but an awesome opportunity to train along the side of our best Nordic racers in the Nation.

The U.S. National Biathlon Team was also training in the area at the time, giving us biathletes more folks to shoot and ski with. It also made for a very busy range. We spent a lot of time skiing round the rollerloops at Solider Hollow, taking all that we could from training on this challenging terrain. The 2002 Olympic venue offers one of the most challenging rollerloops that also has a shooting range, in the country.

Towards the end of the camp we all had a chance to put our endless hours of training to the test in two time trials. These were the second part of a two part trials for the National Team's training camp in Sweden this November. Trials racing in October, on rollerskis, is always a bit of a challenge but it is still racing.

Our team made the most out of this opportunity. After nearly three weeks of working on technique, shooting strategy, mental training and race preparation at the venue, we were ready put our new skills to the test. There were some successes, which we took note of,and some disappointments, which we also took note of. Unfortunately we all fell short of qualifying for the Sweden trip. While disappointing, we have been working hard to look at the positives and use this experience as motivation to keep working hard in the weeks ahead.

We are all back in Northern Maine now and have put in another couple hard weeks of training since our return from Utah. Upon our return to sea level we pushed through a good, hard intensity block, while also quickly getting back into the everyday life of things at home. We have been very fortunate to have had amazing weather during this period, which makes life so much better! The cold, wet, windy days of late October and early November can make training this time of year one of the most challenging times.

We now have one more block of fitness testing in the week ahead. Then, hopefully, we will all be skiing! Half our group will be hanging around the area for another week or so, skiing as much as possible. Natural snow is preferred, but the man made stuff is so much better than nothing. Big Rock is going to be making snow for just this reason. This is an awesome opportunity, not only for the MWSC team, but also for all the skiers in the area. Keep checking the website for updates on when they plan to open.

West Yellowstone will be the start of on-snow skiing for the rest of the group. The MWSC Nordic team will be out there as well, kicking the racing season off. Biathlon races will be held here as well a couple weeks later. Let the racing begin!

A snow report coming soon, at least lets hope so!. Until then, keep thinking wintry thoughts!

Biathlon Update - 9/6/11
The start of September finds our teams a bit spread out as we rest up and recover from our summer Sugarloaf Hill Camp. Raleigh and Ben joined the post-graduate athletes back in Fort Kent and made a return to some normalcy, shooting and skiing back on the loop at 10th Mountain. BethAnn returned to Caribou after a quick camping trip in Vermont with Dave. Kat and Seth are still downstate, visiting with Seth's parents after weathering Hurricane Irene in Gilford with the Howe's. Next week is our second fitness-testing week of the summer so we'll be back together soon to prepare for that.

Sugarloaf camp was great this year. The ominous weather forecast we were faced with to start cleared up nicely, leaving us with only two days of rain in total. The MWSC Elite Cross Country and PG athletes joined us, along with Jack Elder (SMBC), Lauren Olsen (SLU), and Alex Howe (UVM), making for a great (and large) group to train with.

Workouts varied with some focusing on speed while others put in large hours during our ten-day stay. Highlights included several head-to-head rollerski speed workouts on the hills heading up around Sugarloaf's access road. Our first week ended with a hike/run that took us from the Kingfield side of the mountains, up over Mt. Abram, along a nice rolling ridge and up the back of Sugarloaf. Guesstimates from Will (we should have known better) put the workout at around four hours but most of us finished in closer to five. On our second to last day a small group found the motivation to crawl out of bed at 4:30 and hike up Burnt Mountain to watch the 5:50 sunrise.

The food and accommodations, as always, were awesome. The Carrabassett Valley Academy cooks did a great job keeping us all well fueled. Like last year, we stayed in their new dormitory just up the road from the academic building. Evenings were filled with Scrabble, movies, volleyball, and analyzing ski video from our rollerski workouts.

Overall the camp was a great success. It's always really nice to have a new venue to train at for a bit and having such a large group of athletes come together can make for a very productive environment. Now it's back to the grinding stone as we continue to train toward our next set of races in Utah at the end of October. Up next: testing week in Caribou. 3,000 meter track run, strength testing, and VO2 max testing on the treadmill.

Biathlon Update - 8/15/11
The North American Rollerski Biathlon Championships in Jericho, Vermont took off last week in the heat and humidity of the green mountains. Participants from the Maine Winter Sports Olympic Development Team raced in the senior and junior men and women's races while the Post Graduate Group competed in the youth divisions of the sprint and pursuit races at Ethan Allen Firing Range. The PG's endured the heat and trained through the race series by rollerskiing the back roads of Vermont, hiking across Mt. Mansfield, and spending a training day at the Craftsbury Nordic center. MWSC ODT spent the week training and preparing for the championships good efforts were put forward by all members with Russell Currier, BethAnn Chamberlain and Katrina Howe competing in the senior events and Raleigh Goessling and Ben Greenwald competing in the junior events. From Jericho it was a week home and then to Sugarloaf Mtn in Carrabassett Valley Maine for training camp. Updates on camp coming soon.
