Having the right tools for adventure means more than having the right equipment. It means having the proper knowledge and experience. This not only enhances your time outdoors, but builds the strength of your outdoor community. The Healthy Hometown's Adventure Initiative Program is dedicated to providing opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor program leaders to learn and develop their skills. By working with nationally recognized leaders in the outdoors, such as the National Outdoor Leadership School and the American Canoe Association we provide training courses that keep you on the forefront of innovation and education in wilderness pursuits. Wilderness First AidIf you plan to spend time in the backcountry you need to be prepared. Fast paced and hands-on, this two-day course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for people who travel and work in the outdoors.
This course is pre-approved by such organizations as: the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other governmental agencies.

Wilderness First Responder
This is a nationally recognized program that trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80-hour curriculum includes standards for urban and extended care situations. Special topics include but are not limited to: wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making, not the memorization of lists.
This course is designed specifically to provide you with the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. Half of your time will be spent completing practical skills, case studies and scenarios designed to challenge your decision making abilities. Adult CPR is included in this course.

Swiftwater RescueThis 2-day format includes hands-on practice time and advanced rescues including the essentials of river philosophy, hydrology, wading, swimming, throw rope use, use of rescue PFDs, mechanical advantage, and more. This course is the most comprehensive training for paddling trip leaders.
