Update: 08/27/2010 - Greetings!

As the Outdoor Calendar begins its annual autumn decline in events to promote, and my weekly search for those events of particular outdoor lifestyle interest repeatedly results in dead ends, I have decided to try a new-fangled approach to adventure seeking.

Begging your intellectual pardon, let's call this a Cyber trek.

While the weather of late has been marvelous, and current forecasts call for that trend to continue, I highly recommend getting outside while the getting is still good - a late summer or early fall hike with family and/or friends is purely good for the soul.

But when that day comes that outdoor adventure is simply not suitable, you may want to dust off your trusty search engine - Google can be a good vehicle for expanding your outdoor acumen.

As a starting point, I googled "outdoor life, maine" and found this:

Jack Mountain Bushcraft School - Long-Term Wilderness Immersion Programs, Outdoor Survival Courses, Professional Guide Training, Wilderness Journeys And Traditional Crafts Since 1999

We're a full-time bushcraft and wilderness survival school and a traditional Maine guide service located on the banks of Aroostook River in Masardis, Maine. We run field-based, college-level semester and yearlong immersion programs in bushcraft and wilderness guide training, as well as shorter courses on tradtional north woods crafts, sustainable living and wilderness survival. We also offer guided canoe, snowshoe and fishing trips.

Seriously? A comprehensive outdoor immersion program right here in Aroostook County is very cool!

Now, let's try googling "outdoor adventure, maine."

Welcome to the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club - MOAC is an all-volunteer member organization. Members organize and lead all trips and activities from beginner to expert. Our outdoor activities range from peaceful and relaxing to challenging and full of excitement. From the extremes of winter camping, ice/rock climbing, strenuous hiking, mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, to the gentle sail, walk or snowshoe, MOAC has something to offer everyone. We are a diverse group with members of all ages and experience. Join MOAC to challenge yourself, share your outdoor skills and meet other outdoor adventurers!!

I have always been drawn to the idea of 'common adventure' - regular folks sharing their interest for the outdoors through grassroots trips and activities. Looks like the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club is going strong, and it's good to see our local ski and sport clubs offering similar programs.

Finally, a Google search on "outdoors, maine" turned up quite a gem:

The first
The first "portage hikers" of Mt. Katahdin! "MNHA Guides Jon and Ed on the top of Mt. Katahdin 1979.
Outdoor Adventure - Wonderful blue skies, cool dark pine forests, diverse wildlife, and trails that vary from easy to challenging. Maine has hundreds of hiking trails to choose from, including the Appalachian Trail whose northern terminus is Mount Katahdin. Come explore Maine and the variety of hiking trails we offer.

Wow! I wonder if they still had all their gear by the time they reached Chimney Pond?

By the way, if you are an adult interested in skiing with MWSC this coming winter season, please take a few moments to fill out this brief survey. Simply copy and paste this link into your browser: www.surveymonkey.com/s/FCFXZMG Thanks - your feedback is invaluable!

Happy trails!
Be well - play outside often.

Sincerely,
Mark Shea

MWSC Biathlon Tackles D2R2 - One of The Hardest Century Rides Around

By Gary Colliander
MWSC Biathlon Director

A field of sunflowers at one of the rest stops.
Sometimes you hear about a special hike, cool bike route, or just plain cool event and you think to yourself, "I have to do that." The MWSC Biathlon Team heard about D2R2 through some local riders and we thought that this was one of those "I have to do that" events! Started as a fundraiser for a local land trust company called the Franklin Land Trust, the D2R2 has grown year after year, even after riders take a beating for no less than eight hours as they cover the tough roads and climbs.

There are three rides: 180km, 100km, and 50km. The 180km alone boasts 16,000 feet of total climbing, over 70% on dirt roads, and a few climbs nearly two miles long - with a few reaching between 25-27% grade. Last year one old fella was asked before Ambrosia Road (.6 miles and 27% up loose gravel) if anyone had made it up. He replied back, "I haven't seen anyone make it up this road since I was a boy!" Patten Hill was another 25% grade road, this time on pavement for half a mile before it continued up for another 1.5 miles on loose gravel that was supposedly a road.

But the ride was more than just a "gut check" training ride. This route and region proved to be some of New England's finest. The entire way we rode along beautiful streams and rivers, up and over passes with some really awesome views, and around some farms that made you want to quit your day job just to go and work on them. The local volunteers were engaging and really excited to have us all there. This may need to become an annual tradition!

RIDE-FLY-RIDE
Friday, August 27 • Presque Isle

This year's Crown of Maine Balloon Fest will host a unique event for cycling enthusiasts! Dubbed the "Ride-Fly-Ride," the race consists of a qualifying bicycle road race and the possibility of a balloon ride with your bike before the final leg - a race to the finish line!

The qualifying race takes place Friday at 6:00 p.m., and will take riders on a 20-mile course from the Northern Maine Fairgrounds to Industrial Street, through Mapleton to the Hughes Road, up Skyway Street to Edgemont Drive, to the finish line at the rear entrance of the Fairgrounds. The top two qualifiers from each of six gender/age divisions will then be matched with balloon pilots to devise a strategy for the main event early Sunday morning - a hot air balloon ride with their bikes to an undisclosed location. The top two qualifiers from each division will ride together in their respective hot air balloons then race each other to the Fairgrounds, finding their own way back from the landing site!

The fun is not just for the cyclists, though. The balloon pilots will participate in a "Hound and Hare" challenge, tossing a bean bag from the balloon onto a target on the ground below. The pilot closest to the bulls-eye wins a cash prize. The prize for the cyclists is, of course, the hot air balloon ride itself ($180 value).

Registration for the road race is $20, which includes a Crown of Maine Balloon Fest Ride-Fly-Ride t-shirt for the first 30 entrants. Registration opens at 4:30 p.m. on race day. Age divisions: Male/Female 16 - 29, 30 - 49, and 50+. If less than 3 competitors register within a particular age division, a judgment will be made at race time regarding the appropriate age division in which to register the unchallenged cyclists. Weather in northern Maine is unpredictable, so if the hot air balloons are unable to launch on Sunday morning, rain checks for rides will be issued to the qualifiers for redemption at another time during the festival or at next year's festival.

FIFTH ANNUAL MAD LAKE PLOD-PEDAL-PADDLE TRIATHLON
Saturday, September 11 • Madawaska Lake

For anyone interested in mixing up some fun with a "low key" triathlon. Start time is 9:30 a.m. at Brent Jepson's camp (beginning of the South Shore Road on Madawaska Lake). You might concentrate on running, or biking, or paddling - come see how you stack up when you put all of them together! This 4-mile run, 13-mile pedal, 3-mile paddle (or just go for a swim on your own if you'd rather) will be a good time - and good training for the Acadia Triathlon on Columbus Day weekend in Bar Harbor, in case you might be interested in going down with a bunch of us.

Put together a 2- to 4-person team to split up the tri into the three legs, or do it yourself Ironman style. There will be Road Bike and Mountain Bike divisions. Participants will need to provide their own kayak or canoe (we might have a few spares - let us know if you need one) and life jackets. All ages welcome but there will be no adult supervision provided for children on the roads or on the lake.

No charge (therefore no t-shirts, no trophies, etc. - only bragging rights). BBQ cranked up about noon; bring whatever you'd like to munch on, grill, and drink. Please let us know if you think you might be coming so we can let you know if the date changes because of dangerous weather. We could also use two volunteers to help with "unofficial" timing, etc. Contact Brent Jepson at (207-492-2222 or 207-498-6166) or jepson@gwi.net or Jeff Dubis at (207-834-7543 or 207-316-8866) or jdubis@maine.edu FMI
