Healthy Hometowns Ski Program

Many people choose to live in Maine for the healthy, safe lifestyle we're able to enjoy here.

Contrary to the image of our state, however, Maine is ranked at, or near the top of the nation for the incidence of childhood obesity, childhood type II diabetes, childhood smoking and asthma. Alcohol and drug use among middle school and high school populations have reached alarming levels as well.

If we are to make a difference in the lives of Maine's children, we must commit to the hard work of being there for them on a daily basis, identify the barriers they face in living healthy lives and address each of them in sustainable, practical and effective ways.

Through the Healthy Hometowns Ski Program, Maine Winter Sports Center is already making a difference in the lives of thousands of Maine children. Since it's beginning in 1999, the Healthy Hometowns Ski Program has focused on:

  • Accessiblility - we provide skis, trails located on school property, grooming equipment and a curriculum. We are a regular presence in their lives.
  • Sustainablility - we have a professional staff and passionate communities dedicated to making a difference.
  • Creating a healthier environment for the children and their families - with an emphasis on personal accountability - our coaches are mentors and role models for all to follow.

We have over 70 communities involved in the program, including 30 community trail systems spread out across the state. These programs are reaching thousands of Maine children each year.
